Merino is considered as the world’s softest and finest quality of wool, as compared to any other wool or synthetic fabrics. There are several other brands of wool available in the market these days, however compared to any of these wool merino is entirely different and unique. It is finely crimped and exceptionally soft and light, generally less than 24 microns in diameter. Besides, a fine merino may have up to 100 crimps per inch, which makes it the breathable fabric suitable for almost any season. This ultra-fine quality makes the wool well suited to blending with other natural fibres such as silk and cashmere.
Merino is a lifetime favourite for many men and women around the world. It is easily styled and is available in wide variety of fashionable products ranging from women jumpers to women vests, women jackets to women cardigans, women skirts, men jumpers to men cardigans, men vests, as well as for children jumpers, hats, scarves and various other products.
Yet, despite of being opted for world’s finest wool, it is also equally important to take proper care of it so it can last long. By paying a little simple attention, merino wool knitwear would be able to retain its look, feel and shape for years.
- Just like your other clothes, merino also appreciates a rest after a busy day out. Avoid wearing the same merino garment on consecutive days. It will allow the wool to maintain is natural resilience, and at the same time the spring in the wool fibre will get enough time to recover and bounce back.
- As said merino is breathable fabric, which makes it apart and special from any other fabric. When you are not wearing the merino then hang the garment in a cool, fresh place giving it enough room to expand. It will allow the creases to disappear on their own and the garment will seem to be much thicker and more luxuriant. Once it is done, the garment should be folded away in a well-ventilated place to help it retain its shape.
- If your merino garment gets wet, don’t put it under hot sunlight for hours – your merino won’t feel comfortable. Also don’t put it in the tumble drier as well unless the label specifically says you can. Always dry you merino in shade, it may take a while to dry it off completely but it will help it to regain its shape and last long.
- Always ensure that the pockets are empty when you take off the garment. If not then they will soon start to bulge and sag, and the best classic styling of the merino will be lost ultimately.
- Lastly, most people forget to check at the label. It is always advisable to check the label and read out the washing instructions. There is no standard formula of washing merino wool as different wool weights and blends need to be cared in a different way. However, reading the instructions will surely help to achieve this, which will help you maintain your merino last long.
Do
- Use a wool or delicate cycle on your machine.
- Use a cool or cold-water temperature.
- Wash dark colors separately.
- Use normal washing powder or detergent ( but NOT one with a fabric softener, whitener or bleach) or use a Wool approved detergent like Softly.
- Dry flat in shade away from direct sunlight if you can. You can hang over a line, avoid peg marks. NEVER use the dryer- if you do it may shrink.
